How long and how much will I bleed after a delivery?

The time you bleed the most is just after delivery. Soon after delivery it is normal to bleed around 200 to 400mls with a range between 100 to 600mls. The amount over 600 mls is considered abnormal and is consistent with Post Partum Haemorrhagie (PPH). PPH is a life threating condition , which your obstetrician is fully trained to deal with.

After the first hour bleeding is reduced, however it is heavier than your menstruation period. In the course of few days to weeks, following delivery, bleeding reduces and completely disappears. This may last from few days to about 3 – 6 weeks.

Pitfalls
  1. Bleeding more in the morning after delivery is normal due to collection of the bloods in the vagina overnight.
  2. Small clots are normal, however big clots as big as golf ball need to be reported to your obstetrician
  3. It is normal for the bleeding to have a strong smell, however the smell should not be offensive. Any offensive smell needs to be reported immediately to your obstetrician.
  4. For this period is recommended that you use sanitary pads and avoid using of tampons. Tampons can obstruct the blood flow and encourage growth of bacteria.
